BE AN ALLY
Anti trans laws are being proposed and passed on a daily basis, and trans people and their families are moving to safe cities, like Portland, every day. The Trans community needs allies more than ever, and you can show your support by being an ally. What does it look like to be an ally?
Ask for Pronouns and use them
Respect peoples gender identity and avoid using outdated gendered language like ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ or ‘guys’ or ‘dudes’. Person, people, folks and friends are great inclusive words!
Understand that gender is a construct and gender can present in many different ways
Educate yourself, your friends and family about the trans community
Ask questions respectfully. If you wouldn’t want someone to ask you a question, don’t ask a trans person.(ex. asking questions about their body parts, what surgeries they have had, or sexual questions)
Don’t out a trans person. Just because someone is out to you, doesn’t mean they are out to everyone.
It’s not everyone’s goal to pass. Don’t give advice or opinions about if you think someone is passing or not, unless they specifically ask that of you.
Correct people who misgender or deadname others. Challenge anti trans jokes, comments or attitudes.
Stand up to authorities who mistreat or discriminate against trans individuals. Write letters or make phone calls to local politicians to demand equality for the trans community. Educate yourself on what kinds of anti trans legislation is being passed and why its harmful.
VOLUNTEER WITH US
The T House always needs volunteers! We have many ways you can get involved and support what we are doing. As the saying goes, many hands make light work, and we want to build a strong supportive community in our space! Here are some of our current needs:
Help us in the Clothing Closet
Sorting donations, taking clothing that doesn’t work for us to other organizations, washing, steaming, de-pilling, folding and hanging clothing, tagging clothing for tracking purposes. Donate gently used or new clothing, shoes, accessories, wigs, binders, tuck kits, breast forms or other gender affirming items. We’d really appreciate it!
Event Planning
We’d like to start hosting regular events to bring the community together. These can be located at The T House, or we can partner with other local and queer organizations to host. Do you have ideas? Do you like to plan? Are you good at event timelines? Do you excel in promoting? Have a skill you’d like to share? We’d love your support!
Social Media and Marketing
Love to promote on social media, and know how to target the right audience? Do you understand how to work the algorithms? Do you know when is the best time to post? Have you been successful increasing engagement, or know how to use tags? Maybe you know how to make websites and social media posts more accessible for those with disabilities. Perhaps, you are creative and know how to do photo editing, or write posts that catch peoples attention. We need your help!
Fundraising
Are you good at public speaking? Do you know people with deep pockets who would love to support the community? Are you skilled at grant writing? Do you know other organizations, companies, or non profits who would be interested in donating or partnering with us? We would love your support in growing our funding!
DONATE TO THE T HOUSE
Currently, we have a few hundred dollars available to pay for gender affirming services for those who are unemployed, underemployed or otherwise unable to afford gender affirming services. We offer vouchers to cover part or all of the services offered by Bombshell Transformations, and would like to expand that to eventually cover peoples mental health and medical care needs. The more donations we get, the more support we can give to the community. You can choose to be a one time donor, or commit to ongoing donations. As we grow, we will be implementing special benefits for monthly donors. Thank you for your patience as we continue to implement these programs.
